Four and out.

I was looking through the predictions for the World Series yesterday and today. On Yahoo sports, the prediction was 6 or 7 games with three of the four pundits picking the Yankees.

I’m going to call it four and out. Don’t be surprised if the games are exciting and close but the Yankees wind up winning with a sweep of the Phillies. I said to more than one person BACK IN AUGUST (I can verify this), the Yankees would go all the way.

Aside from statements about mystique and aura being a pair of dancers, there has been something about this year’s Yankees team that had been sorely lacking since the late 90s. Namely, they’ve been a team! Sounds strange, no?

Still, the mark of a World Series champion is not the stars on a team but how well all the players work together and the magic of this season has been how the Yankees have been in first place throughout most of the season with nary a headline to show for it.

Note - this is probably the swansong for Hideki Matsui and Johnnny Damon in pinstripes. Yankee fans should not expect them back next season, not when in all likelihood Jorge Posada will be DHing more and Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera are capable of playing full seasons in center and left field.

The key to the Yankee season has been finally getting a true first baseman in Texiera after several years of hands of stone Jason Giambi and also getting the double punch of CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett.

Mind you, Joba Chamberlin will be in the bullpen next year and your Yankee rotation will most likely be Sabathia, Burnett, Wong, Pettite and Hughes.

These are heady times for Yankee fans to say the least and they do deserve to win it all. So, as good as the Phillies are, expect the Yankees to be just a little bit better when it counts and for them to provide one or two squeakers in their four game sweep of the Phils.

Now, if only my beloved Mets manage to go out and get Matt Holliday and either Roy Oswalt or Roy Hallady we may have another ten year anniversary of the Subway Series. That’s about all that’s left for Mets fans to root for this time around.
